Hmmm? Which would I choose if I could only have one? You see, I am both a chocoholic AND a cheese fiend. Many women are chocoholics, so that’s easy to understand. It has a stress-reducing agent which makes women feel so much better. The only problem is to keep it under control. Just hearing the snap of a high quality chocolate bar gives a woman shivers as she anticipates the wonderful taste she is about to devour. Once in her mouth, she feels all is right with the world.
Cheese, on the other hand, is not for everyone. Many cheeses even need an acquired taste. Not for me, though. Other than Limburger, I haven’t met a cheese I didn’t like. My mom even liked Limburger. I would give it to her for Christmas. I had to wrap it several times in foil before going in our refrigerator so that it wouldn’t smell everything up. When I presented it to her on Christmas Day you would have thought I gave her a bar of gold. She was so excited and couldn’t wait to get home to put it on crackers. Mom put just about everything on crackers.
In cooking, chocolate and cheese (separately) have such potential. Think of all the recipes there are requiring either ingredient. Yesterday, I saw a recipe for a bread pudding made with chocolate croissants, dark chocolate chunks, and the custard. Oh, my! I just had to write down the recipe. It will definitely be on my table one special day. My family refuses to eat any other cake but chocolate cherry cake (similar to Chocolate Forrest cake) for their birthdays. It’s made with a fudge cake swirled with cherries then covered with a deep fudge drizzle frosting when cooled. We love it! My husband even sprinkles mini chocolate chips in his yogurt every morning. Chocolate is just plain addicting.
Now this may seem like a far-fetched tale, but I have a friend who ate M and M’s constantly throughout her pregnancy. I can remember being at a friend’s house with her, and she parked herself right next to the candy dish eating M and M’s all night. When it was time to leave for the evening, she filled all her pockets with the candy for the ride home. Not long after that her baby girl was born. You guessed it! The baby went into DT’s not having chocolate after birth. Sounds unbelievable, but it is true. Poor little baby took awhile getting over not having her M and M’s.
When it comes to cheese and chocolate, I crave both. I sneak them both when I can. Hard to do that now since my husband and I are both retired. My family probably gets tired of me making cheese covered dishes for dinner. However, since my granddaughter likes Mac and cheese I can get away with it frequently (and not the box kind). My cheese drawer of our refrigerator is jammed packed with cheeses. It’s so full, I can hardly close the drawer. I must feel like Charles de Gaulle. He said, “How can you govern a country which has 246 varieties of cheese?” The more variety the better, I say.
When it comes right down to it, I just can’t do without either cheese nor chocolate. Dave Barry said it perfectly. “Your hand and your mouth agreed many years ago that, as far as chocolate is concerned, there is no need to involve your brain.” I agree. However, for me, this sums it up perfectly. “Chocolate without dessert is like a beauty with only one eye.” Well, maybe. So, what’s your favorite delectable dessert or food?
